The Dalhousie Tigers ended a disappointing CIS Final 8 with an 11 point loss to the QSSF Champion Concordia Stingers. Despite an early 5-0 lead the Tigers never really got on track and had trouble dealing with the pesky Stinger defenders committing 13 first half turnovers and 19 in total. To give the Dal boys credit, a solid third quarter got the Tigers to within 7, and backed by a noisy cheering section of current students and alumni they played hard until the final buzzer.
The lone bright spot was Simon Farine who scored 30 points and added 6 rebounds. The lack of support on offensive was obvious as no other Tiger scored more than 6. Josh Beattie who sank StFX in the AUS Final with 4 straight 3 pointers scored 6 points on 3 for 9 shooting in 18 minutes of court time. 5th year player Germaine Bendegue went 1 for 5 with 6 rebounds in 36 minutes of play.
With the loss Dalhousie drops to 0-4 in CIS Final competition all-time.

Tigers Trail Stingers by 13 at Half
The Dalhousie Tigers, relegated to the consolation side of the CIS Final 8, are looking for redemption after a disappointing 24 point loss to UBC on Friday. Outmatched physically by the larger Thunderbird team, the Tigers hoped to use their size advantage over the smaller side from Montreal.
Dal took an early 5-0 lead, before allowing an 11-0 run by Concordia. The quick Stingers are proving troublesome for the Dalhousie guards causing multiple turnovers (including 5 by Andrew Sullican and 4 by Simon Farine) and have Dalhousie off their game with several blown plays resulting in easy baskets for Concordia.
Dalhousie down as many as 19 in the second quarter have managed to narrow the gap with a 6-0 run to end the half, including a last second buzzer beater from Robert Nortmann.
The Tigers are being lead by Farine with 14 points, no other Tiger has more than 3.
If Dalhousie is able to mount a comeback and win, they will play the winner of StFX and Ottawa on Sunday. If not the Tigers will return to Halifax 0-2 and 0-4 in CIS Final 8 tournament history.

Tigers Lose QF to UBC by 24
The UBC Thunderbirds ended their first round losing streak at nationals with a convincing 78-54 win over the Dalhousie Tigers. UBC lead for much of the game, including by 17 at the half, and outscored the Tigers in each of the four quarters.
The upside of being a shooting team is that you can score a lot of points quickly - like in the third quarter against StFX - but when you are off, things can go badly in a hurry.
The Tigers were lead by Josh Beattie and Simon Farine who each scored 11 points. The Tigers as a team shot 36% from the floor, and were 4 for 13 from three point range, they also were out rebounded by UBC 42-26.
Dalhousie will now play in the consolation round against the #7 seed Concordia Stingers on Saturday at 12:30pm.

Tigers Down at Half
The Tigers first foray into national championship basketball in 13 years is underway, and nerves are showing after the first half. Despite leading early on the Tigers trail by 17 at the half, 38-21.
The Tiger shooters that stole the show at AUS Final 6 last week started the game cold, Dal is 9 for 28 from the field, and 2 for 7 from 3 point range. The lone bright spot is Josh Beattie who has 8 points on 4 for 8 shooting.
The Tigers have made use of their bench early on with 8 players seeing the floor and all have at least 6 minutes of playing time.

Scotiabank Place First Impressions
Arrived safely in Ottawa and made it to Scotiabank Place (SBP) in time to see the #4 ranked Western Mustangs shoot around.

Dave Kent from Carleton gave me a tour of the media centre...looks like a good setup, the media centre is one end of the building, so very accessible to court side. A nice supply of pizza, muffins, coffee, and water awaited my arrivial. Having just finished the Jumbo Gumbo combo at Dunn's (a very large smoked meat sandwich and fries) I limited myself to a coffee.
I took a few photos to check the lighting of the place, which looks comparable to Metro Centre (or quite good) but should be brighter with the luxury box and advertising lights turned on...for any photogs reading probably f2.8 1/400s at 1250ISO, which is acceptable for sports pics - I would like to get it down to 1000ISO.
Dal is holding a pre-game reception at noon on Friday which I plan to attend before the Tigers take the court at 2:30pm to take on Canada West runners-up UBC. The feeling amongst the media types around here is that Dal has a good shot to beat UBC, and that we have a very nice seed at #6 - 2008 champion Brock were a #7 seed and #6 Western knocked off #3 Saint Mary's last year. Now they may just be telling me what I want to hear, but UBC has a horrible history at this tournament, and they haven't played a road game since January, so...anyway less than 24 hours til tip-off.
